Land animals on Delft tiles

Land animals on Dutch Delft tiles

During the centuries that the Dutch roamed the seas to find unexplored parts of the world, they encountered thousands of animals they had never laid their eyes on before. Elephants, monkeys, giraffes, rhinos, deers, wild horses, lions, leopards, turtles and many more different land animals were therefore often depicted on Delft tiles. Specifically the tiles that were made during the 17th century, polychrome and blue, live up to the imagination of what it was must have been like to encounter one of those animals for the first time.
