Daily life on Delft tiles

Daily life on Dutch Delft tiles

During the first half of the sixteenth century, the daily life of the Dutch was often portrayed on sets of tiles. These wall tiles simply showed the same type of things you would see nowadays when walking down the street, going to a bar or a market-place. People chatting, walking, shopping, drinking and so on. Just as in the paintings that were made in this same period, portraying these everyday things quite often had a symbolic meaning as well. For example The evanescene of tobacco smoke symbolized the transcience of worldly things and life's fragility.
