It is no surprise that the centuries in which the Delft tiles flourished, wars were often fought. Not only in the Netherlands or in the other countries, but also at sea or overseas. The Dutch painters of Delft tiles were often inspired by wars such as the 'Eighty Years' War' in which the United Provinces of the Low Countries revolted against their sovereign, the King of Spain. Guards, soldiers and knights can therefore often be found on Delft tiles. Most of them in blue, but occasionally we come across polychrome tiles. The diversity of the depicted soldiers and their pose is endless.
